I pulled the trigger on a new bike today. I got a Bianchi SOK 29r Single Speed off of craigslist.com. This bike is brand spanking new and has never been on dirt, but that will all change tomorrow. I kept seeing it on craigs list and some local MTB forums but figured it would be gone soon and it was out of my price range. The guy wanted $1300 a few weeks ago but he was down to $1100 this week since he had no bites on it. So, I got a hold of the guy and got him down to $900.
Turns out he got this bike as a replacement from Bianchi for a cracked frame on another model. He rode it down the street once and decided that he didn't like 29er's. The bike sells for $1400 new so I feel like I got a pretty good deal.
It's an aluminum frame so it's lighter then my steel Monocog but it might not ride as smooth. It also has Reba forks and I've been riding rigid for some time so that will be different. I'll know more after I get it out for a few test runs this week.
Anyway, on with the photos (Wish the photos were better but this is the best I can do at midnight in a cramped garage)

I've made a few changes to the bike. I sold some stuff around the house so I could buy some components. I already installed the new Thompson Elite stem, Race Face Dues XC bars and race seat with titanium bars (not the best for long rides but it's much lighter). I have a new Thompson setback seatpost, new chain and 20t cog on back order that I hope to get next week. I'll get new photos out after everything is installed. So far it's much lighter and will be even lighter next week. |

I just built up a new ride a few weeks ago and I love it. It's a Zion 737 frame powder coated blue with Mavic 719's (XT hubs) and Reba forks. I set it up as a 1x8 XC bike that I can ride when I'm not feeling the SS.

Sweet, a 29er 1x8. That is very unique. I bet it is a blast. I should think about building something like this. |

remgeo, do you find that only 8 gears work for you? What is your gearing? |

8 gears seems to work good for me. Of course on some big climbs I wish I had a granny gear on the front. It's set up with a 32t chainring and a 11-32 cassette with old school grip shifters. It's a 29r so the gearing is a little different then it would be on your regular 26.
I rode a SS almost exclusively for a year or two so having a few extra gears now seems like I'm riding in style. |
