Description for Lake Poway
Short, fun ride for all but the least fit and least experienced riders. Most of this ride is fire road that loops around the lake. The upper road option includes some pretty healthy climbing (you can also stay near the lake for a flatter ride). Nice changing views of the lake and surrounding hills. You can take off up the beginning of the Mt. Woodson trail if you want to test your cardio: it is STEEP! The fun part is a twisty but not-too-narrow singletrack that takes you up from lake level, down below the dam then up a challenging climb back up to the lake. Unfortunately lush growth near base of dam was badly burned by (2007?) fire. A good first exposure for kids or beginners who want to go beyond straight fire roads to "real" mountain biking. Will make first-timers feel like pros! 20 to 40 minutes depending on fitness. Bring your BBQ and cooler and get your friends into MTBing. If you are intermediate or better you can at least work up burger hunger and beer thirst! Warning: can be HOT in summer! If it's 78F downtown it can be 98F here. Late in day is worst. Plan accordingly.
