Description for Lake Hodges
This is a fun ride if you don't have a lot of time. Its a mix of wide single track and jeep trails. There are a few climbs to get the legs and lungs warmed up. There are several side trails that can be taken to mix things up. You can also ride up to the top of Bernardo Mountain, which is tough climb.
Directions to Lake Hodges Trailhead
Start from the parking lot off of Sunset Dr. Head down the trail to the lake and go from there. This is an out and back ride. Beginners will be challenged in a few sections but overall it should be ridable. I have seen guys wearing full downhill gear, not sure where they are riding but there are some places to catch a little air.

A good fun ride for a switch when you only want about an hour ride. The first 5 miles of this ride is flat through the valley a little boring but a good work out if you ride it fast. At the 5 mile point you enter the trees and then climb up some of the best flowing single track as you make the 500 ft climb. It gets steep at times and you may have to get off your bike a few times before you learn the climb but it is not too technical. This part of the trail is great because is has a lot of shade and feels like you are back east all the way up to the summit where you come to a fenced in look out area. I usually rest up there and then turn around and enjoy the rapid descent which is incredibly fun. Most people ride Hodges West but this is fun to do to switch it up a bit. Enjoy.

Fun for beginners, but, some challenges for intermediate riders if you tackle Bernardo mountain. There are some easy fire roads (the roads are still beautiful, but relatively flat, easy), but also plenty of single tracks to keep things exciting.
I'm beginner-intermediate, and had a ton of fun on the easy stuff, and found some challenges here and there on single tracks and Bernardo mountain.
The park backs up to neighborhoods, so you'll always remember you are in the city (compare to Sycamore canyon, which feels miles from nowhere). But, it's beautiful and if you stop for a j-break, you'll see some birds and wildlife :)

I liked this one since the lake is in view most of the time and it wasn't to tough. Pretty popular. Get the map at the trailhead, and don't miss the dam at the far end.
