Description for Big Laguna Trail
Big Laguna Trail is found in the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area, Descanso District of the Cleveland National Forest 45 miles east of San Diego.
This is some great singletrack. Aside from the lack of hills this is as perfect as single track gets in the San Diego area. Nice hardpacked trail with embedded rocks, granted it is not very technical but just beautiful. A great place for beginners. It is about 10 miles of trail through oak and pine forests. Elevation is about 5,700 feet. This a very flat trail, only at the beginning is there any climbing and it is only about 800 feet on a partially paved road. If someone has never experienced good pine tree riding this is the place.
This is a great trail to combine with Indian Creek, Pine Mountian, and Nobel Canyon for some truly epic mountain bike rides.
Directions to Big Laguna Trail Trailhead
There are many places to start, South end by the kiosk, the campground, or the north end at the Nobel Canyon trailhead.
Take i-8 east about 40 miles and exit Sunrise Highway. Go up the mountain about 6 miles just passed a big Kiosk. Park along the road here and find the partially paved road up the 800 foot climb.
If you continue up Sunrise Highway 2 more miles you will pass the campground and be at the Nobel Canyon trailhead.
Be sure to have a wilderness pass.

First time on this route, it is a great trail to take friends that want to get into mountain biking and if you want a relaxed Sunday ride (or any other day, why not). It is fun, offers a lot of options to make your route shorter or longer because of all the other trails around (bring a map), and also offers some easy technical sections for beginners. The trail/route description as well as the map are very accurate. I am just thinking of coming back in the different seasons year round to see how the views change as the landscape is beautiful. We found a lot of other mountain bikers, all levels!!!
One piece of info: there is no more information center or kiosk as a landmark for the southern parking area (Aug, 2008).
Happy riding!
See you out there....

This is what mountain biking should be. All hard packed single track through beautiful nature. This trail winds through rocky wilderness, pine forests, wind swept meadows, and a little lake. It is rarely flat but the ups and downs are never overwhelming. The challenge aerobically is that you are at 5000 feet so the air is thinner. I found myself stopping to catch my breath on climbs that would have been trivial closer to sea level. There are ample sign posts which help tell you that you are still on the right trail. I would still recommend printing a map. This ride is especially nice because you can cut into loops of various lengths depending on your time and stamina.
All in all a very fun ride for all levles of riders.
