Description for Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock Trail in Sedona is a great 12 mile loop. It has a little bit of everything that Sedona has to offer and is the main link to the 2 sides of south Sedona. The quality single track isn't that long but what it has is sweet. To ride Cathedral Rock mountain bike trail start at the parking lot across from Bike and Bean bike shop. It is at 179 and Bell Rock Blvd, next to a Circle K. Start on Bell Rock Pathway, a large flat crowded trail and head north on the west side of Bell Rock. Turn at the tunnel, I always have a hard time finding this tunnel for some reason so keep your eyes peeled. After the tunnel under 179 crank up a small hill and then the fun really begins. This is Templeton Trail, a great trail all the way to Budda Beach. Fun technical switch backs right before Budda Beach. If you want to really add some miles you can climb up to the Airport Mesa/Carroll Canyon. I actually recommend the Llama trail or the Submarine Rock Loop if you want to add miles to your mountain bike ride. The ride back on the dirt road stinks but it makes it a loop. If you want just turn around after you get to Verde Valley and do it reverse. If you are looking for a Sedona mountain bike trail that has it all Cathedral Rock is your trial. Be sure to check out Cosmic Ray’s book, Fat Tire Tales and Trails, best trail book in the world!

Directions to Cathedral Rock Trailhead

From Phoenix head north on 17 towards Sedona. Exit 179 to Sedona. Trailhead is about 8 miles on the right, after Bell Rock Blvd. and a Circle K. From Flagstaff just head south on 89 to 179 and then to the same parking lot. You can also come down 17 and then up 179, I never know which is faster, I guess it just matters what kind of mood you are in.

1. Love it!

Either way you go on this loop is amazing. Watch out for the crowds of hikers and tourists in the more common areas. You do get plenty of secluded riding.
