Description for Thumper Loop Cottonwood
DEFINITELY do this trail in a clockwise direction! The ride starts out at the Cooper's Hawk Trailhead (top of Roadrunner Road in the park) with a 3-mile climb up Raptor, including a series of moderately technical mini lung-busters. At the Thumper/Raptor intersection, there is a group of trail signs. Go right and you'll be on the Thumper Trail, a fast, mostly downhill, semi-technical trail designed by mountain bikers in the 1990s. At the next trail intersection, go right. This is Lime Kiln. Although it starts out sandy (good chance to work on your sand technique), it quickly firms up and becomes a fast-pedaling descent ending in a series of moderately difficult, rocky technical sections. The better you are, the faster you'll go! At one point, you'll come to a trail intersection with a US Forest Service wooden barrier/fence on the left. Go through that - the other direction is a dead end. Towards the end of the trail, a small trail sign reads "Lagoon Trailhead... Campground Trailhead." If you've been having a tough time, take the "Lagoon Trailhead" - there's a restroom there if you need it.
Directions to Thumper Loop Cottonwood Trailhead
You're going to Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood (zip 86326). The park entry road can be accessed at the intersection of Main Street & 10th STREET in Cottonwood. Go North on 10th Street until you see the sign to Dead Horse Ranch State Park. There is a $6 entry fee into the park, but that includes use of the showers - always a nice option if you've gotta head back to Flag or Phoenix! Once in the park, take a left at ROADRUNNER Road. Drive to the top of Roadrunner (where the restroom building is), and park in the parking lot. The trailhead is across from the parking lot/restroom, on the semicircular road with the bench.
